MURRAY TYRRELL - 2000

Murray Tyrrell was born in February 1921, served in the Australian Armed Forces in World War II and was a renowned cattleman before taking up the reigns of Tyrrell’s Wines from his uncle Don in 1959.

Murray Tyrrell was a notable Australian wine industry personality and contributed to the development of Australian Wine and Cuisine.

Affectionately referred to as the ‘Mouth of the Hunter’, Murray Tyrrell was a champion of the Hunter Valley wine growing region, Australian wines and especially bottle-aged Hunter Shiraz and Semillon.

Murray Tyrrell was best known for pioneering Australia’s first commercial Chardonnay in 1971. A few years later he repeated with the Pinot Noir variety.

Murray Tyrrell was awarded a member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (Australian medal, AM) in January 1986.

Murray Tyrrell will be sadly missed for his energy, enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to Australian wine, sports and restaurant industries.
