Robert Ho was born in Hong Kong and came to Australia in 1956. He studied hard and completed his high school education at Manly Boys High in 1960 before going on to study accountancy. He became an Australian citizen in 1962 and, after completing his accountancy degree, studied for his diploma of Hotel & Catering Management at East Sydney TAFE. Over the next few years - and while running several restaurants - he began giving something back to the industry he came to love by teaching at several TAFE’s including his alma mater at East Sydney as well as Ryde and Brookvale colleges. On numerous occasions he was asked, and accepted, the role of judge at many apprentice competitions. Having a strong sense of public service and love of the industry he served on several Restaurant & Catering NSW committees and as a member of the City of Sydney Council. He has been described as the Mayor of Chinatown and even the Godfather of the Chinese Restaurant Industry and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the community and tourism industry. Robert proudly boasts that Chinese food in Australia is of a higher standard than Canada, USA, Taiwan and the Peoples Republic of China and he believes that dining plays a significant role in high powered business transactions and that a lavish, memorable feast definitely provides a smooth touch to serious negotiation. He has been a tireless campaigner against various governments’ continuance of the Fringe Benefit Tax. Robert Ho is seen as one of this country’s food trailblazers working tirelessly to raise the standards of Chinese cuisine in Australia. |
