MICHAEL FISCHER – 2002

Michael Fischer began his career in the hospitality industry when he enrolled as a student in a Hotel Management Diploma Course conducted by William Angliss Food Trades School and Footscray Technical College. Immediately after obtaining his diploma Michael traveled in Europe and Israel before commencing work with Oliver Shaul’s team at the Summit Restaurant.
During Michael’s six-year tenure with the Summit organization he worked at the Sydney Opera House, Flanagan’s Afloat, Chattie’s Restaurant and the MLC Tavern. In 1976 Michael opened Barnaby’s Riverside Restaurant where he continues to operate along with Barnaby’s Lakeside Restaurant in Lansdowne. Each of these restaurants have been award winners from Restaurant & Catering NSW and American Express.
Michael became involved with the Restaurant & Catering Association many years ago and began a more active relationship in 1985 when he led the protest march ‘Don’t Let Keating Stop You Eating’ during the anti-FBT Campaign.
In 1992 Michael became President of Restaurant & Catering NSW serving until 1998. During his term a new Industrial Award was created, membership increased, a practical smoking policy was established and Michael lobbied for the creation of the ‘Dine or Drink’ licence.
From 1998 until 2001 Michael was the President of Restaurant & Catering Australia. The main focus during his Presidency was taxation reform which included the introduction of the GST and the FBT and non-deductibility for dining campaign. Other accomplishments include the establishment of criteria for food safety compliance and the establishment of the National Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence.
Michael continues to devote his energies to the hospitality industry and Restaurant & Catering NSW.
