Industry News: Mandatory Food Safety Supervisor Training
Dear Member Recently, the association has been attending meetings with the Food Authority NSW to discuss the State Government’s position on Food Safety and the establishment of a mandatory Food Safety Supervisor to be trained and present whenever food is being served. Restaurant & Catering NSW is participating in these meetings on behalf of our members who over time have expressed a vital interest in this matter. Other interested parties who attend each meeting of the Hospitality Sector Co-Regulatory Working Group Meeting are Clubs NSW, AHA, Australian Retailers Association, Hotel Motel Association, and Baking Industry Association along with the a representative of the Minister for Primary Industry. The purpose is to create a group with vested interests in Food Safety who represent the industries with significant concern to jointly try to resolve the issue so that there is a benefit to the industry while achieving the objectives of the government. To date there have been 4 meetings of the working group who are resolved to establish a training regime that is effective and fiscally possible considering the current economic situation.
Recently, Queensland enacted
legislation that has established the Food Safety Supervisor role and previously
Victoria has enacted very similar legislation. The Minister for Primary
Industries, the Hon Ian Macdonald has announced that Mandatory Safe Food
Supervisors will come into effect in early 2010. All qualified chefs will have
completed in their training 2 units of competency which gives them the necessary
qualification to be a Food Safety Supervisor. The two proposed units are: One component of the program is the establishment of a ‘refresher’ training package either every 3 or 5 years. This detail has not been finalized as well as other regulations. Further, there are businesses that operate over 7 days per week for more than 12 hours per day who would be required to have more than a single person trained as a Food Safety Supervisor. To over come this financial hurdle it has been suggested but not finalized that there will be a senior Food Safety Supervisor who has overall responsibility and is the nominated person the local council will contact when inspecting a premise. To assist the NSW Food Authority launch the training program, Restaurant & Catering NSW will be conducting a project where 2 groups of 17 will undergo Food Safety Supervisor training and we will do post training research into the effectiveness of the training and to determine its effectiveness of the training in Clubs, Hotels, Motels, Retail and Restaurants. Included in the training will be 2 Environmental Health Officers (EHO) representing those who ultimately will be inspecting the food service outlet and checking on the Food Safety Supervisors capacity to deliver the outcome of the training. In the interim, we strongly suggest that you patiently wait for a final announcement containing greater detail on the final structure of the program which has not been completed nor has the industry stakeholders who are fundamentally critical to the success of the program been researched. You have our commitment to follow this pathway to developing the Food Safety Supervisor program to its conclusion. We are aware of recent announcements by other training organizations. However, I can assure you that the Working Group, R & C NSW and any of the industry stakeholders have not reached any final conclusions at the time this has been written. Kind regards
